School housekeeping authority guide

A practical standards checklist for school housekeeping teams.

Use this as a management conversation tool - not as a statutory compliance certificate. The purpose is to make daily expectations visible and identify where practical training is needed.

Direct answer: A school housekeeping checklist should cover the condition of washrooms and learning spaces, cleaning sequence, chemical controls, tool segregation, equipment condition, grooming, child-safe conduct, waste handling, supervisor checks and evidence of induction/refresher training.

1. Washrooms

  • Cleaning schedule is visible or recorded.
  • High-touch points are included in the routine.
  • Consumables are replenished before shortage.
  • Tools used for toilets are segregated from classroom/pantry tools.
  • Odour, drainage or plumbing issues are escalated rather than masked.

2. Classrooms, corridors and common areas

  • Cleaning is timed to reduce slip/trip risk around students.
  • Dust is removed rather than redistributed.
  • Wet-floor warnings are used when required.
  • Frequently touched surfaces receive appropriate routine attention.
  • Furniture and fixtures are cleaned without unsafe improvisation.

3. Chemicals and PPE

  • Containers are labelled.
  • Workers know the correct dilution method for products they use.
  • Chemicals are stored away from student access and food areas.
  • Unapproved mixing is prohibited.
  • Required gloves or other PPE are available and used correctly.

4. Tools and equipment

  • Mops, cloths, brushes and buckets are clean and serviceable.
  • Colour coding or another clear segregation method is understood.
  • Machines receive pre-use checks and safe cable handling.
  • Damaged tools are removed from use and reported.

5. Grooming, communication and child-safe conduct

  • Uniform and personal hygiene expectations are clear.
  • Staff know whom to approach for classroom access or restricted areas.
  • Communication with students and teachers remains respectful and role-appropriate.
  • Found items, incidents and hazards are reported through a defined route.

6. Supervisor control

  • Daily opening/closing checks exist for priority areas.
  • Defects and complaints are assigned for corrective action.
  • New workers receive induction before independent work.
  • Refresher needs are identified from observed gaps, not only calendar dates.
